Light + Vision Workshop

Dave Jackson and Michael Howard are doing a workshop together in Dallas May 24-25.  If you're in the area, this would be an excellent workshop to attend!  I'd love to go and so I'll be answering a couple of questions here on this post in hopes of winning a seat.

#1:  Why Photography?

I've been a musician since I was a child.  Singing, playing, whatever... it was always fun and part of who I was.  I've been working as a musician (I'm a worship leader) for 13 years now and sadly music doesn't always get to be as fun as it used to be because it's a job.  I usually grab a guitar on the way out the door on Sunday morning and then put it back as soon as I get home.  Thankfully, photography has become a new creative outlet for me and I'm having more fun with photography than I ever have with music!  I've always been interested in cameras and taking pictures, but I fell in love with taking pictures of people about 4 years ago.  It started with the birth of our first child and went from there.  I've been running my own wedding and portrait photography business for 2 years now and I'm having a ball!  I grab my camera every chance I get (not just when I have a job), and can't wait to see what I can create!  I love working with people and want to make images of them that tell "who" they are, not just what they look like.  Like music, I believe photography is something that I might never really "master", but always continue to grow and evolve with.  I love it!

#2:  Why would I like to attend this workshop?

I'm still relatively new to photography and want to dedicate as much time as possible to education.  Especially spending time with other photographers who take pictures of people.  I've been blessed to attend Cliff Mautner's workshop as well as spend a day with Mike Colon and Bob Davis.  Each of these times has proven to be invaluable for me as a photographer and for my business, and I want to continue to schedule workshops like these into my calendar every year.

I love using off-camera flash and am constantly trying to learn how to be more creative in the way I use it.  Having the opportunity to shoot and then actually have my work critiqued would be great!  I've never had that before.  Even though I would love to shoot in a great studio with professional models, the part of this workshop that really appeals to me is the VISION part.  This is something that I have struggled with.  Who am I as a photographer?  This year I have really tried hard to define my "style" for myself.  I want people who are familiar with me to see a photograph and know that I took the picture.  Discussing how to figure this out would be the highlight of the workshop for me.

Finally, I live in central Florida, but my home is in Dallas where my parents, mother-in-law, brother and friends still live.  Right now with finances tight, out-of-town workshops are tough because the cost includes airfare, hotel, transportation, and food.  If I were to win a spot in Dallas however, my only cost would be the airfare.  What a deal that would be!
